Meet Michelle

I AM A Protector to all

“Keeping people safe during their travels, knowing that I have a part to play in all of that, is the best part of my job.”

— Michelle, Screening Officer with CATSA

What’s your secret talent?

I feel like people know this about me, but I speak many languages. French is my first language, but I can also speak English, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, a little bit of Vietnamese and Spanish. I worked in Syria for two years, I am from Mauritius and we have a lot of Indian people who live there. And the rest, I picked up because I wanted to talk to people in their language. So, when they need me in Customs, I’m always available to help.

How did you get into the aviation industry?

I was travelling around the world, working as a caregiver for kids. After I got married and had my own kids, I wanted to be devoted to my family and provide for them.

So, when I first came to Canada, I said to myself, “one day, I will be working at the airport.” I loved what they did and wanted to be a part of it. I was friends with the mom of someone who worked here and she called me one day to say that they were hiring. And that’s how I got the job! I’ve been at Toronto Pearson for 17 years, now.

What do you love most about your job?

Keeping people safe during their travels, knowing that I have a part to play in all of that, is the best part of my job. I know that I am doing something good by keeping them safe. I love that.
