Safety Spotlight

Dress your best, wear your safety vest!

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is any clothing or equipment that is used by a worker to protect them from an injury or illness. There are many types of PPE including; safety footwear, vests and ear protection. Always wear the appropriate PPE for hazards you may encounter on the job or as required for your role.

At Toronto Pearson, all airport staff are required to wear a high visibility, reflective safety vest and CSA-certified safety footwear when in certain areas of the airport such as on the apron and baggage road locations, among others. Please note that these are the minimum requirements for PPE while working airside; it is not meant to replace any specific requirements implemented by any airport employer where those requirements correspond to a higher standard of protection against health or safety hazards.

Safety Vest

When choosing a safety vest, it is crucial to select the right size and ensure it is fastened and worn on your outermost layer. Vests that are too big or too small can be uncomfortable to wear and impede movement, increasing the risk of being caught in equipment or machinery. It is your responsibility to ensure the vest is clean and to ensure the highest level of visibility. Speak with your supervisor if you are unsure when to wear your safety vest or if you need to be resized.

Safety Footwear

Safety footwear must be CSA Certified with a green patch. Inclement weather can create hazards, so be safety conscious and wear slip-resistant safety shoes or boots to prevent slipping.
