Stay Safe: Reduce the risk of injuries
Did you know slips, trips and falls are some of the most common causes of injury?
Winter is officially here! Despite the mild weather this holiday season, adverse winter conditions like ice, slush and snow are coming. Whether working inside or outdoors, keep you and your team members safe for the winter season with these safe practices:
Footwear matters: Wear appropriate footwear for the conditions you are working in such as anti-slip footwear indoor or CSA safety shoes when airside.
Penguin walk: Embrace safe walking practices by taking short steps with a side-to-side rocking motion.
Stay present: Avoid distractions like walking and texting.
Mind the move: Take extra care on moving walkways and escalators. If you have excess baggage, strollers, or bulk items, use an elevator. If you see passengers attempting to use the escalators, please re-direct them to use the elevator.
Housekeeping: Keep your workspace tidy and be mindful of tripping hazards such as ground service equipment, chock and cones.
Report it: Promptly report any hazardous conditions, indoors or outdoors to Airport Operations at 416-776-3055.
Snow desk: If you see sand boxes missing sand or scoops, or notice the area requires treatment, call 6-SNOW.
Safe Movement: Exiting equipment & vehicles using 3-points of contact
Take extra precautions when entering and exiting a vehicle. Follow these steps to ensure a safe dismount:
Look first: Always check your surroundings before stepping out from the vehicle.
Three-point contact: Maintain three-point of contact by holding onto support handles when available.
No grabbing: Avoid reaching for objects like coffee mugs, water bottles, or tools while exiting the vehicle – exit first, then retrieve the items.
Balance: Keep your center of gravity over your support leg for better balance.
Hands-free: Keep your hands out of your pockets for added stability.
Preventing slips, trips and falls is a team effort. Regularly inspect your areas and keep your workspace clean and free of any hazards. If you happen to spot a hazard, please call 416-776-3055 or 416-776-3033 (emergency), depending on the urgency.
Stay safe and remember to walk like a penguin!
